The Reality of Living Out of a Backpack for a Month

So… You Think You’re a Minimalist, Huh? You know that moment when you confidently tell your friends you’re going backpacking for a month and they all look at you like you just volunteered for Survivor: Tourist Edition? Yeah — that was me. Armed with one backpack, 3 pairs of underwear, and optimism, I set out on a month-long adventure. What could go wrong? (Spoiler alert: everything.)

The Good, the Bad, and the Seriously Questionable

The Good:

  • You finally learn what you actually need. Spoiler: it’s less than you think.

  • No baggage fees. Shout out to my backpack for being the MVP.

  • You get to move like a ninja through airports with no checked bags to weigh you down.

The Bad:

  • Forget packing options — you’re wearing the same outfit in every travel pic. (Accessorize with a different local beer to spice it up.)

  • That hostel laundry situation… let’s just say it’s character-building.

The Seriously Questionable:

  • I brushed my teeth with a packet of hotel shampoo once. Don’t ask.
